Spring is finally here! After months of winter hibernation (and way too much time indoors), now is the perfect time to start the habit of stepping away from the desk to soak up some sunshine and let fresh air work its magic. Longer days bring more opportunities to get outside; though, with spring’s unpredictable mix of sunshine and sudden downpours, you might find yourself dodging some rain. Still, even with the occasional shower, this season is a reminder to embrace the outdoors whenever possible and let fresh air boost your mood and productivity.

We tend to think of work as something that happens inside, in places like offices, home desks, and meeting rooms. However, research shows that a short break outside can improve focus, reduce stress, and spark creativity. A quick walk or a few deep breaths in the fresh air can reset your mind, helping you return to work with renewed energy. Natural light is a powerful mood booster, and exposure to daylight can help regulate sleep, increase alertness, and combat a mid-afternoon slump.

Bringing work outside doesn’t have to mean setting up your laptop in a park (though if that’s an option, why not?). It can be very simple, like taking a call while walking, stepping outside for a quick break, or eating lunch away from your desk. Walking meetings can be a great way to encourage movement while keeping conversations flowing. Even small moments like five minutes of fresh air before diving into a new task can help break up the workday.

And on the inevitable rainy days, crack a window, take a breath, and remind yourself that at least it’s not snow. Spring is a natural reset and a chance to shake off the winter slump and bring a little more energy into the workday. So take advantage of the season! Step outside, breathe in the fresh air, and let your work (and self) benefit from it.
