The Resume Gap Is Shrinking, But Not for Everyone

It’s worth slowing down and seeing the person behind the paper.

Resumes today are more polished than ever. With access to AI tools and ready-made templates, many candidates are able to put together documents that check all the standard boxes, like clear formatting, keyword optimization, and concise results. Writing a resume was once time-consuming, but now it can be assembled quickly and efficiently.

But let's be real: not every candidate has equal access to, or comfort with, those tools. For some skilled trades professionals, long-tenured employees, and older job seekers, the resume may not be second nature. In many cases, individuals with decades of hands-on experience have never needed to create one. Others may not be comfortable using computers or navigating digital application processes. These candidates bring value, but may be overlooked in systems built for those with more technological experience.

When interviewing for a new role, it’s not all a matter of ability. Part of it is a matter of presentation. This is a place where recruiters and hiring teams have an opportunity to step in with support, guidance, and grace. Some candidates may need assistance navigating aspects of the modern hiring process. This can include everything from building a resume for the first time to signing digital documents or using platforms like Zoom or Microsoft Teams for interviews. Sometimes, just a few minutes of coaching can be the bridge a candidate needs.

A resume alone never reflects the full value someone can bring to a team. The same applies to candidates with gaps in their work history or those who have moved through multiple jobs in a short period of time. On paper, that can raise questions. But behind those decisions are often very human reasons - company closures, family caregiving, health concerns, or simply trying to find the right fit. Rather than dismissing those paths, we can ask better questions and create space for honest conversations. Importantly, we can remind ourselves and our clients that resumes are just one piece of the story.

Hiring teams are tasked with balancing efficiency and empathy. While technology can speed up screening, it can also hinder potential by filtering out candidates who don’t present perfectly on paper, but may be highly capable with the right support. This is where recruiting teams can make a real difference by sharing their expertise and offering guidance where needed.

A strong resume is valuable, but it’s not the sole measure of a strong hire.
